Manchester Art Gallery

Volunteer opportunities

We work with over 70 volunteers and we aim to provide volunteer opportunities that are interesting, engaging and rewarding.

Volunteering at Manchester Art Gallery can help you to develop skills, feel involved in the life of the gallery and meet new people.

Our core volunteer roles

Delivering learning sessions

Highlights tours, Stories we Share, Art Bites and Philosophy Café discussion sessions are all led by volunteers who enjoy chatting to visitors.

Supporting learning sessions

Get creative alongside artists and other freelancers to support family and adult making sessions during the holidays and weekends. This role is great for people interested in being creative with other people.

Clore Art Studio

Volunteer in the Clore Art Studio to support family drop in visitors.

Behind the scenes

A small number of volunteers support us behind the scenes including helping us to catalogue and research art works, documenting our archive material and helping to prepare for exhibitions and displays.

Get involved

You don’t need to know lots about art or art history to become a volunteer at Manchester Art Gallery, we just ask for a commitment to the role, an open mind and a willingness to get involved. We offer opportunities to adults over the age of 18 who live, work or study in the Greater Manchester area. If you are interested in volunteering with us you will need to register on the MCRVIP Volunteer website.  All volunteer opportunities will be posted on this website.

Unfortunately we do not have the capacity to involve everyone who approaches us. We are always thinking of new ways to include  volunteers in the work of the gallery whilst at the same time making each experience and opportunity meaningful for existing volunteers.

There are lots of opportunities across the city for volunteering in museums, galleries, parks, libraries and cultural events, and these opportunities will be posted on the MCRVIP website.
