Summary

Mahogany tea table with top carved as a 6 petalled circle with concentric circles in the centre, and a reeded rim. 6 slender reeded legs splaying from pierced panels directly under the top. Asymmetrical matching brackets to each leg.

Mahogany tea table circa 1887 Designed by Charles Edward Horton Made by James Lamb, Manchester James Lamb was one of the north of England’s leading furniture makers in the late 1800s and made furniture for Manchester Town Hall, the Assize Courts, Bolton Town Hall and wealthy private clients. This inventive six legged table was exhibited at the Manchester Royal Jubilee Exhibition, 1887 in a display based on a fashionable middle class drawing-room entitled A Study in Reds. The Art Journal praised the table’s “successful solution of a familiar problem” and “combination of lightness and strength”. Purchased 1986.498
