A London Church

Robert Polhill Bevan 1865 - 1925

Summary

In the background is the church of St John the Evangelist, Waterloo Road, seen through a railway arch, near Waterloo Station. The composition is framed at the top by a dark archway which suggests the viewer is positioned within a tunnel looking onto the street scene. Beyond the tunnel, to the right, is a row of terrace buildings with a woman stepping into one of them. To the left is another row of buildings which has two cats playing on one of the steps. These two rows of buildings run either side of a central road which then comes to a crossroads with two horses about to cross from right to left. On the pavement running horizontally there is a woman and child walking to the left past the railings. Behind the railings is a neo-classical style church facade with fluted columns. Despite its position off centre this building dominates the view and the eye is drawn towards it.
