Saint Philip's Church, Salford
Summary
A view of St. Philip's Church, Salford. The architecture is austere in the main body of the church, neoclassical in style with relatively unadorned facades. The upper windows are arched, and there is a simple triangular pediment. However, on the near end of the building is an elaborate curved portico, with ionic columns, surmounted by a tall two-tier round tower with a domed roof. The church is situated on flat open country, with trees behind it, and one or two specimen trees in front. Beyond these can be seen the city of Manchester, with its Collegiate church (later the Cathedral) dominating the horizon. A large proportion of the image is devoted to the sky, which is largely clear and formed of the parallel lines typical of an engraving, making the cumulus clouds that the artist has included seem oddly prominent by contrast.
