Othello (Act 5 Scene 2) Desdemona in Bed, Asleep

William Satchwell Leney 1769 - 1831

Summary

Desdemona lies asleep in a draped bed. The light falls on her. Othello stands in front of her, silhouetted. He holds a long dagger in his left hand and his right hand covers his face in grief. There is a table to the left with two bottles on it. This print is from Volume 2 of 'A Collection of Prints from Pictures Painted for the Purpose of Illustrating the Dramatic Works of Shakespeare by the Artists of Great Britain (1805)'. However it was not engraved from the large paintings commissioned for Boydell's Shakespeare Gallery. Nevertheless it was added to Volume 2.
