Man from Barbados
Augustus Edwin John R.A., O.M. 1878 - 1961
Summary
Bearded male figure with curly hair leaning forward. His body faces to the right while his head turns to the left. The figure wears a tie and a jacket and has a furrowed brow. His hands are clasped to the right of the image. There are no background details. The title of this work was changed in 2021 from 'The Mulatto' to 'Man from Barbados'. Although as far as Manchester Art Gallery are aware 'The Mulatto' is the title that the artist gave to the work, we felt that keeping the original title was, in this instance, less important than the gallery playing its part in making racial slurs less acceptable in society today. The new title, as it is not artist-derived, is provisional (if research reveals the name of the sitter this may be a better title for the work). Hannah Williamson 13 Feb 2021
