Wandering Sinnte
Augustus Edwin John R.A., O.M. 1878 - 1961
Summary
In 1906 John went to Normandy with Wyndham Lewis where they fell in with a large band of Piedmontese gypsies. This charcoal drawing is based on a pencil sketch made at the time. It is one of John's most successful figure compositions. Executed in a style he usually reserved for exhibition pictures, it has the appearance of a cartoon although it was never in fact painted.
