A Welsh Landscape
Summary
A reproduction produced by the Vasari Society of a drawing by Richard Wilson. The drawing shows a mountainous landscape, with a tree in the foreground on the left-hand side. There are three people beneath the tree, two seated and one standing. The secene in the foreground is much darker than the rest of the drawing, which is made with a thin pencil line. A path or river winds between the mountains, and trees and buildings are visible on the ground alongside this. A smaller tree stands in the foreground to the right. Text from the accompanying booklet produced by the Vasari Society: "18. RICHARD WILSON, R.A. (b. 1714; d. 1782) A WELSH LANDSCAPE Ashmolean Museum, Oxford. Presented to the University by Mr. Chambers Hall in 1855. Black lead pencil, reinforced with black chalk and stump in foreground, on white paper. 23.9 x 37.3 cm. (9 3/8 x 14 5/8 in.). Wilson's drawings are almost always in this manner, though often on grey paper. In spite of a certain timidity of workmanship, Wilson's eye for essentials and his notable breadth of vision assert themselves even in his slighter studies. One of twenty-one drawings by Wilson, almost all of exceptional quality and interest, forming part of the Chambers Hall Collection. L. B."
