Head of an Old Man

Leonardo Vinci, da (after)

Summary

A reproduction produced by the Vasari Society of a drawing by Leonardo da Vinci. The drawing shows the head of a man, seen in profile and facing towards the right. Details of the man's hair are only suggested at by a few lines around the top of his skull. The man is quite old with sunken cheeks and wrinkles around the edge of his eyes. He has a hooked nose and the corner of his mouth is turned down. The expression on his face is serious and possibly sad. Only a very faint outline of the top of his clothing is visible. Text from the accompanying booklet produced by the Vasari Society: "No. 4 LEONARDO DA VINCI (b. 1452, d. 1519) HEAD OF AN OLD MAN IN PROFILE TO THE RIGHT British Museum, 1900-8-24-106. (From the Lely, Esdaile, Spencer and Vaughan Collections) Red chalk. 10 x 7.5 cm. (4 x 2 7/8 in.) The drawing belongs probably to the latter part of Leonardo's first period of residence at Milan, which extended from 1483 to 1499. It was during this time that the use of chalk superseded that of the silver-point as his favourite medium in studies which were intended to be carried to a high degree of finish. EDWARD McCURDY."
