Castle on a Rock

Tiziano Vecellio Titian c1485 - 1576

Summary

A reproduction produced by the Vasari Society of a drawing by Titian. The drawing shows a rural landscape with a large rock in the centre of the composition, on which sits a castle. The castle has a large round turret towards the front, and a square one behind and to the right. In the lower right of the composition more rock formations are visible in the background, and to the left are a group of trees. There are clouds in the sky above. The original work was done in pen and ink. Text from the accompanying booklet produced by the Vasari Society: "No. 13 TITIAN (b. 1477 (?); d. 1576) CASTLE ON A ROCK British Museum, Malcolm 385. (From the Lely, Cosway, Lawrence, Esdaile, and Malcolm Collections.) Pen and bistre. 13.6 x 26.8 cm. (5 3/8 x 10 5/8 in.) The majority of the landscape drawings of the Venetian school which used to pass under the name of Titian are in reality by his follower Domenico Campagnola. The present study is among the few which have a claim to be considered by the master's hand. It shows a grasp of the planes, a sense of enveloping and pervading light, a disdain of small detail, an organic mind in short, the absence of which distinguishes the genuine Campagnola covering foreground and distance alike with facile pretty strokes. L. BINYON."
