Landscape with Trees and a River
Tiziano Vecellio Titian c1485 - 1576
Summary
A reproduction produced by the Vasari Society of a drawing by Titian. The drawing is of a landscape, with a river, a bank rising up from it, and several leafy trees surrounding. The contours of the river bank and tree trunks are created by many closely drawn lines. The tree stump and foliage in the foreground are drawn in a darker, heavier line. Text from the accompanying booklet produced by the Vasari Society: "No. 8 TITIAN (TIZIANO VECELLIO) (b. 1477 (?); d 1576) LANDSCAPE WITH TREES AND A RIVER Collection of the National Gallery of Scotland. From the Laing and Royal Scottish Academy Collections. Pen and bistre. 41.7 x 29.4 cm. (16 7/16 x 11 9/16 in.). An adequate critical study of the drawings by and attributed to Titian has yet to be made. The present example belongs to a well-defined group which seem to have as good a claim as any, perhaps even a better, to be regarded as authentically his work. The fine flowing and sweeping use of the broad reed-pen in the modelling of the foreground bushes and truncated stems, as well as of the bank beyond the stream, the sense of movement and rapidity in the stream itself, and the free and vital massing and feathering of the scattered trees above the bank, all bespeak the hand of a true master and one whose way of seeing and feeling were at any rate closely akin to Titian's own.
