Summary

A reproduction produced by the Vasari Society of a drawing by Antony van Dyck. To the right of the composition is a seated dog facing forwards with its head tilted upwards to the right. The dog's right front paw is on the floor, while its left front paw is raised. The dog is wearing a collar around its neck. To the left of the composition is another study showing only the dog's torso and front paws, which are both on the ground. The original drawing was done in black chalk with white highlights. Text from the accompanying booklet produced by the Vasari Society: "No. 26 ANTONY VAN DYCK (b. 1599, d. 1641) STUDIES OF A GREYHOUND British Museum. From the Hugh Howard and Earl of Wicklow Collections. Black chalk on lihgt brownish paper, heightened with white. 47 x 32.8 cm. (18 1/2 x 12 7/8 in.) Two studies for the greyhound in the portrait of James Stuart, Duke of Lenox, formerly belonging to Lord Methuen and now in the Marquand Collection, Metropolitan Art Museum, New York. Other versions of the picture are in the collections of the Earl of Darnley, the Earl of Denbigh, the Earl of Craven, and the Earl of Dysart. In the picture the Duke lays his hand on the head of the dog. L. B."
