Summary

A reproduction produced by the Vasari Society of a drawing by Antony Van Dyck. The drawing shows a portrait of a man from the waist upwards. The man is facing forwards with his torso but his head to turned and looking towards the right. He is wearing contemporary dress and has a cap on his head. His left hand is held against his torso on the left side of the composition. Text from the accompanying booklet produced by the Vasari Society: "No. 18 ANTONY VAN DYCK (b. 1599; d. 1641) PORTRAIT OF JAN SNELLINX Collection of the Duke of Devonshire, Chatsworth (from the Collection of N. A. Flinck). Black chalk. 29.5 x 19.6 cm. (11 5/8 x 7 3/4 in.) The original study for the etching (Wibiral 10), which reverses the figure. Very little essential variation is made in transferring the design to the plate, beyond the addition of a cloud of heavy shading behind the left shoulder (right in the drawing). A copy of the etching was made by Peter de Jode (Wibiral 37). A. M. H."
