Landscape

Conegliano, Cima Da (?)

Summary

A reproduction produced by the Vasari Society of a drawing presumed to be by Cima da Conegliano. The drawing shows a landscape with hilly cliffs in the foreground, some buildings in the middle ground and mountains beyond. Growing on the hills in the right foreground are a few saplings. There is a building with a tower in the left middle ground and lower buildings towards the centre. Groups of trees are on the landscape in front of the mountain in the distance. The artist has used the top left area of the composition to do some studies of curly hair. The orientation of the paper is portrait. The text from the accompanying booklet produced by the Vasari Society for prints 5 and 6 have been grouped together. This texts reads: "Nos. 5, 6 CIMA DA CONEGLIANO (?) TWO LANDSCAPES British Museum, 1900-5-15-1. From the Collection of the Earl of Warwick. Pen and bistre, with some brush-work. 26.2 x 19.5 cm. (10 5/16 x 7 11/16 in.). Two sides of a sheet of studies which, since its acquisition by the British Museum, has usually been ascribed to Cima. The name Basaiti has, however, been suggested, on the ground of the resemblance to a drawing in the Albertina attributed to that artist."
