Portrait of Gaspar de Crayer
Summary
A reproduction produced by the Vasari Society of a drawing by Antony van Dyck. It is a half-length portrait of a man, turned and looking slightly towards the left. The man has large hands, one of which is held across his chest and the other holds a piece of fabric that is draped over his shoulder to the right. He has curly hair and a moustache, and is in contemporary dress, which includes a ruff collar. Text from the accompanying booklet produced by the Vasari Society: "No. 21 ANTONY VAN DYCK (b. 1599; d. 1641) PORTRAIT OF GASPAR DE CRAYER Collection of the Duke of Devonshire, Chatsworth. From the Collection of N. A. Flinck. Black chalk. 24 x 18.8 cm. (9 1/2 x 7 3/8 in.). Another of Van Dyck's original studies for his Iconography, of which four have already been reproduced by the Vasari Society (III. 17-19; IV 23). It was engraved in reverse by Paul Pontius, with very little variation except in the addition of a shaded background. Gaspar de Crayer (b. 1584; d. 1669) is chiefly known for the multitude of his large scriptural paintings (chiefly altar-pieces), in which he attained something of Rubens' exuberance of manner, without any of the master's certainty of drawing. A. M. R."
