Portrait of Jan Van Mildert
Summary
A reproduction produced by the Vasari Society of a drawing by Antony van Dyck. It shows the half portrait of a man facing forward with his torso twisted slightly towards the left. He is wearing contemporary dress with a jacket fastened by small buttons down his chest, a wide lace collar, and a cloak with he holds to his torso with his left hand. The man has a curly moustache and beard and he is looking to the right. Text in the accompanying booklet produced by the Vasari Society: "No. 20 ANTONY VAN DYCK (b. 1599; d. 1641) PORTRAIT OF JAN VAN MILDERT Collection of the Duke of Devonshire, Chatsworth. From the Collection of N. A. Flinck. Black chalk. 24 x 17.8 cm. (9 7/16 x 7 in.). An original study by Van Dyck for his Iconography. The portrait was engraved in reverse by Lucas Vosterman (Wibiral 87). Several other studies for the same series have already been published by the Vasari Society (III. 17-19; IV. 23; V. 21). Jan van Mildert was a sculptor of German extraction who worked at Antwerp, where he died in 1638. A. M. H"
