The Sleeping Beauty

Edward Burne-Jones 1833 - 1898

Summary

A young woman is lying on a low bed which is covered with blue fabric. She leans back on a red cushion, her left hand resting on her neck, her other arm behind her head. She is dressed in dusky pink drapery. In the foreground are a variety of flowers, with long branches of wild rose in the background, a section of which trails round the bed to the front of the picture. The bed is framed on either side with fluted columns which support a low roof, which is decorated with scrolls and flower motifs beneath overlapping leaf-like tiles.
