The Court of Myrtles, Alhambra

David Roberts 1796 - 1864

Summary

An internal courtyard within a large-scale, elaborate palace. The viewer is situated to one corner of the courtyard, gazing diagonally across a pool towards a complex construction of roofs and colonnaded walkways. In the foreground is the pool by the side of which, on the right, kneel two figures; planted to the left and right of the pool are myrtle bushes. Next to the courtyard entranceway, in the wall at the far end of the pool, is a group of figures stood under a covered walkway, which is supported on decorative, tapering columns; built above this is a second storey with a similar walkway.
