Mer De Glace, Chamonix, Savoy, France
John 'Warwick' Smith 1749 - 1831
Summary
Jagged mountain range lining a stream that has iced up. The ice forms like waves. Grey sky and low clouds surround the mountains and a small patch of greenery can be seen in the bottom right foreground.

Mer De Glace, Chamonix, France about 1781 Attributed to John 'Warwick' Smith 1749-1831 Watercolour, pencil and gum arabic on paper The Mer de Glace or ‘sea of ice’ is a glacier high up in the Alps. The choppy waves are caused by stress within the ice as it flows downhill. Drawn in a harsher style, the peaks might appear threatening. They become otherworldly with no human presence to give a sense of scale. Gift of Misses Mary Catherine, Loetitia and Julia Sharpe 1927.96
