Display Label

Debouchement of the Arveyron from the Glacier of Montauvert, Switzerland about 1791 Attributed to John 'Warwick' Smith 1749-1831 Watercolour, bodycolour and pencil on paper All three of the watercolours in this case are from sketchpads used on Alpine journeys. Here the artist has added pencil annotations to indicate what colour to use when finishing off the sketch away from the scene. He has not always paid attention to his own notes: the rock on which he has written ‘snow’ is grey. Debouchement is an 18-century English word meaning a flowing-out from a narrow space, here of a river from beneath a glacier. Gift of Misses Mary Catherine, Loetitia and Julia Sharpe 1927.98
