Moon Pine, Ueno

Utagawa Hiroshige 1797 - 1858

Summary

The tree received its name due to one full-moon shaped contorted branch, a common natural phenomenon found in many very old Japanese pines. The name Moon Pine also referred to the various phases of the moon seen by looking through the tree from different angles. The famous branch is reported to have blown off during a storm in the early Meiji Period. Today, Ueno Park including Shinobazu Pond is Tokyo's most popular public park.
