Portrait of Sir Robert Peel (1750-1830). He is shown at three-quarter length, seated bfore a billowing drape and a classical landsape. He leans to one side in his chair, and holds something - perhaps papers - in his left hand. He wears britches buttoned at the knee, a coat, a waistcoat and neckcloth. His right hand is clasped and his mouth seems preparing to speak. Peel was an industrialist, politician, millionaire and noted opponent of the abolition of slavery. He was the father of the British Prime Minister Robert Peel.
