Bird in Landscape

Graham Sutherland 1903 - 1980

Summary

Surreal painting representing an abstracted motif of a bird in a fantasy landscape. A grotesque-looking bird stands to the left beside an abstract network of 'scribbled' black lines to the right, all contained within a large, pale cage-like grid. The artist would allow his imagination to transform landscape scenes, resulting in surreal and sometimes frightening imagery. The colours of this particular work consist of a joyful celebration of garish pinks, oranges, yellows and blues.
