Portrait of a man, three-quarter face to left, wearing a hat
Summary
A reproduction produced by the Vasari Society of a drawing by Hans Burgkmair. The drawing is a portrait of a man who is facing to the left. The man's eyelids are half-closed and he is gazing downwards, giving him a wistful or languid expression. The man is wearing a hat, and an outer garment with a wide collar. The shading is done with broad charcoal lines. Text from the accompanying booklet produced by the Vasari Society: "14. HANS BURGKMAIR I (b. 1473; d. 1531) PORTRAIT OF A MAN, THREE-QUARTER FACE TO LEFT, WEARING A HAT Collection of G. Bellingham-Smith, Esq., F.R.C.S. Charcoal. 29.8 x 22 cm. (11 3/4 x 8 5/8 in.). This fine portrait, a recent acquisition of its present owner without record of provenance, has been ascribed to Dürer and was exhibited under his name, with some hesitation, at the Burlington Fine Arts Club (Drawings of the School of Nuremburg, private exhibition) in 1924. But the broad oblique lines, ending square, with which hat and coat are shaded, are not in Dürer's manner, and it is more probable that the drawing is by Burgkmair, whose charcoal portrait drawings are known by examples at Chatsworth (Vasari Scoiety, IV, 29), Dresden, the British Museum (Vasari Society, IV, 28), and elsewhere. C. D."
