cocktail dress

Issey Miyake 1935

Summary

Stretch-pleated dull black polyester 2 piece outfit with narrowly pleated top and very full more widely pleated skirt. Woven labels 'Issey Miyake'. Bought by donor in 2000 and worn occasionally until 2003. Miyake was one of the first Japanese designers to have success in Paris, setting up his house in 1973. His style usually combines traditional Japanese textile techniques like pleating, layering and wrapping, with Western couture.
