evening dress

John Galliano 1960

Summary

Catwalk evening gown, Autumn-Winter 1996. Full length, midnight blue silk dress with v-neckline and shoulder straps; entirely covered in an overdress in fine point d'esprit and chantilly lace, with a full sweeping train from the back shoulders; highered waistline in the Empire style. John Galliano's second collection for Givenchy (AW 1996) was 'Romantic fused with Rock' and was photographed by Paolo Roversi for American Vogue (this outfit being worn by Naomi Campbell). The dresses were described by Suzy Menkes as 'Exquisite Josephine dresses in lace and tulle'. Galliano recorded that he was inspired by a surviving court dress of Queen Hortense of 1798 and by the First Empire generally.
