Is there any hope for them at all or are they already strangers to one another?
“The young naval officer and the elegantly attired girl share some moments of sadness and deep contemplation whilst our sense of sympathy is immediately engaged. Our gaze is then drawn to the warship beyond whose imminent departure will separate the couple. Is there any hope for them at all or are they already strangers to one another? There are signs to read, certainly – hands that touch, a dividing wall, a book left open at perhaps, a significant page and a pink rose bush in full bloom. Romantic love is of course, one of the deepest and most profound ways of connecting and this late Victorian masterpiece evokes both its beauty and fragility.”
