“Be angry. Be angry about hatred, greed and indifference. But not so angry you can’t speak, can’t listen, can’t change”

On Friday 20 September, the gallery is supporting the Global Climate Strike organised by Youth Strike 4 Climate. The gallery will be open as usual and Studio 1 will be used by students and others on the day as a place to gather and organise.
There will be activity in St Peter’s Square 10am – 4pm and a march leaving St. Peter’s Square at 1pm, which all are welcome to attend.
Why are we doing this?
Our exhibition Get Together and Get Things Done has galvanised visitors and staff, giving them an opportunity to reflect on the rights of people to protest. The exhibition uses cultural artifacts to reveal how across time and place, people have gathered together to have their voices heard whenever they have felt oppressed or unheard. Alongside the exhibits themselves, visitors have been leaving comments about the themes of the exhibition, about the works and more frequently, about their current concerns. Below are a selection which refer specifically to the global climate emergency.
“We need to stop putting the blame and responsibility of global warming on the little people, and instead point the finger at the powerful corporations. Switching off a light and reusing a plastic bag will do nothing when companies are pumping tonnes of toxic waste into landfill + the ocean”
“Consumption cannot continue at its current levels or at its current pace. We must question what is a need and what is a desire, then we move forwards. A decrease in consumption is the way to sustainability”
“Children have amazing perspectives on their world, and their wonderful questions help us to cut through the complex that can help us adults if we give them voice and space. Look at Greta Thunberg – what an inspiration”
