Summary

A reproduction produced by the Vasari Society of a drawing by Jean-Antoine Watteau. The drawing shows a man and a woman walking away from the viewer towards the left and both looking down at something forwards of them and to the left. The woman is wearing a lavish dress and is lifting it slightly with her left hand, while her right arm appears to be linked with the man's left arm. The woman is wearing a flower in her hair. The man has his jacket over his right shoulder and he is wearing a hat. Text from the accompanying booklet produced by the Vasari Society: "No. 34 ANTOINE WATTEAU (b. 1684; d. 1721) TWO LOVERS British Museum, 1900.8.24.161. (From the Vaughan Collection.) Transfer from a brush-drawing. 24.1 x 16.2 cm. (9 1/2 x 6 3/8 in.) Study in reverse for the walking group in L'Amour Paisible, now in the Königl. Schloss, Berlin (Klassischer Bilderschatz, 654). Like the preceding [1932.71.33], this study may have been done to assist an engraver or to serve for some other picture. These two figures occur with variations in several of Watteau's later pictures. This and the preceding are impressions in reverse taken by rubbing from the original drawings."
