Manchester Art Gallery has a long track record in supporting schools and teachers in developing creative writing from artworks and felt well placed to respond to the new English Language GCSE specifically Explorations in Creative Reading and Writing.
Our new resource provides a series of approaches that uses an image as the starting point for a piece of writing. Students are encouraged to make personal and creative connections by exploring setting, character and narrative.
Working with Sarah Mullholland, Head of English at Tarporley High School and poet Mike Garry we piloted approaches with year 9 students, with positive results
I felt like I could be myself through my writing. I feel a lot more confident now when I have to write about a picture
Jack, Year 9
Students enthusiasm and engagement with the tasks has had a really positive impact on their progress. They tell me they now have a ‘toolkit’ of approaches and feel much more confident.
Teachers can work through the whole presentation over five to six lessons or select specific elements to meet their students and timetabling requirements. These teachers notes are created to help you plan the ideal lesson for your students.
