From my Window
Summary
View out of a window with curtains pulled to the right, and a flower pot on the window ledge to the right. View of houses and backgardens and a field to the right with a cow and a figure with a stick. Trees on a hill in the background and a train with the indication of a sunny sky. Backgardens to the left. Tree in the foreground to the left with no leaves. Clothes pinned to a washing line in the foreground to the right. The view is from Claughton Pellew's home 'The Pightle' in Overstrand on the north coast of Norfolk where he lived with his wife, artist Kechie Tennant, from 1919 to 1927. The view looks inland towards the coastal railway and beyond. Pellew emphasised harmony and order in his woodcut landscapes. The tidy gardens and farmland are reassuring and suggest an act of escape from everyday life.
