Guarding a Tunnel

Eric Ravilious 1903 - 1942

Summary

Military scene. There is a hillside to the left with two tunnel mouths to the right side. There is a wall to the right below the tunnels with barbed wire coiled along the top. There is a ladder up the side of the wall with a man in uniform climbing up. There are corrugated iron huts outside the tunnels at the top of the wall and sandbags to the right of these. Other figures in uniform can be seen next to these huts. The tunnel depicted is quite possibly Shakespeare Tunnel on the South Eastern Main Line to Folkestone, England. This was the first attempt in the late 1870s to construct a tunnel under the English Channel.
