Summary

A view on Long Millgate, Manchester, dominated by the buildings of Manchester Grammar School. To the left is the building designed by Alfred Waterhouse, with 'SCHOLA MANCUNIENSIS 1870' above the door, and in the centre is the extension built soon afterwards by Mills and Murgatroyd. The street is busy with pedestrians and a covered cart, and in the foreground are a schoolmaster and two boys. It is five past six, according to the clock on the right.
