The Triumphal Arch of Maximilian I (top section only)

Albrecht Dürer 1471 - 1528

Summary

Ornate and tiled dome with a smaller cupola on it. In the centre below there is a frame containing a profile portrait of Emperor Maximilian I. This frame is made using elements from classical architecture. Putti and satyrs play instruments by its sides and two dragons lie above it. A nude woman holding a torch stands on each of the two extremes of the composition. This work belongs to The Triumphal Arch of Maximilian I. The complete arch is an elaborate eulogy for Holy Roman Emperor Maximilian I (1459-1519). It is based on the form of an antique triple arch. Although dated 1515, the first edition was produced in 1517-18.
