The Triumphal Arch of Maximilian I: (second section)

Albrecht Dürer 1471 - 1528

Summary

Battle scene with a scroll above containing an inscription of six lines in German. The clash between two groups of soldiers, each one carrying their respective flags, is depicted in the middle ground. In both groups there are some soldiers in decorative armour coloured in blue and some without armour. In the background a soldier on a horse stampedes across another man lying on the ground, and other sits astride an enemy while holding a sword over him. Two cannons can be seen in the left foreground, close to a green mass on the right. There are trees surrounding the scene. This print is a section of the Triumphal Arch of Maximilian I. The complete arch is an elaborate eulogy for Holy Roman Emperor Maximilian I (1459-1519). It is based on the form of an antique triple arch. Although dated 1515, the first edition was produced in 1517-18.
