Saint Catherine
Summary
A reproduction produced by the Vasari Society of a drawing by Albrecht Dürer. The drawing shows the character of St Catherine standing and turned towards the left. She is wearing a veil and some kind of crown on her head. She has an elaborate dress of heavy drapery and she is wearing a necklace. With both of her hands she holds a sword, pointing downwards, in front of her. Text in the accompanying booklet produced by the Vasari Society: "No. 24 ALBRECHT DÜRER (b. 1472' d. 1528) ST. CATHERINE Collection of Sir Edward Poynter, P. R. A. WIth a collector's stamp resembling Fagan 274 (Beck, Marseilles), but not quite identical with it. Pen and ink 16.6 x 7.5 cm. (6 1/2 x 3 in.). A slight, rapid sketch by Dürer, hitherto unpublished, and undescribed except in Sir Martin Conway's catalogue of the Exhibition of Dürer's works in chronological order held at Liverpool, April to June, 1910, for which an adverse proof of the present reproduction was lent. Sir Martin dates it 1512 (No. 510). I should be inclined to put it at leat ten years earlier. S. C."
