'Buy a Crab, Sir? ... Quite Fresh, Sir!'

Frederick William Jackson 1859 - 1918

Summary

A busy food-market scene. In the foreground are two standing male figures: the customer, turned away from the viewer, holds a cane in his left hand and wears a full length coat with chequered design; before him stands the stall-holder, wearing a coat, tie and hat with an apron, who holds out a crab. To the right of the central pair of figures is the crab-seller's stall, above which are suspended fowl; the activity of the market fills the background, which is illuminated by the bright light of gas lamps.
