Shadows on the Snow

Frederick William Jackson 1859 - 1918

Summary

An impressionist, winter woodland landscape. The viewer is positioned looking along a wide path between two banks of trees with orange and red leaves, with the rest of the landscape covered in thick snow. Two bare silver birch trees are visible in the foreground to the left. The striking feature of the image is the expanse of snow-covered ground, with large grey-blue shadows being cast across the uneven terrain. The sky is bright blue.
