An Old Stocking-Mender

Frederick William Jackson 1859 - 1918

Summary

A scene of a workshop interior: in the foreground is the forward-facing figure of an elderly woman, seated with her head bowed in concentration as she darns the heel of a sock; she has her hair tucked under a scarf worn over her head, a chequered shawl over her shoulders and a white apron tied around the waist of her dress. [This is the same figure as appears in 'Turkeyless and Gooseless', 1926.29] In the adjoining room, in the background, is the figure of a man stooped forward in working at his loom, illuminated by light from a leaded, lattice window. [This is the same figure as appears in 'The Hand-Loom Weaver', 1926.30]
