William Frend de Morgan 1839 - 1917

Summary

Four square plastic-bodied earthenware tiles, coated in white slip and decorated underglaze in hand-transferred 'Persian' colours. The design of each tile features a blue songbird, foliage in two tones of blue and purple and a green background. It is very possible that these four tiles originally had a border of twelve tiles and that these are in fact the border tiles now part of the group 1941.18/14 - this is suggested by the slide of this group, 1918.294/4, for which see details below.
