The Deserted Quarry, Ironbridge

Philip Wilson Steer 1860 - 1942

Summary

View across a wooded hillside at Ironbridge, looking down towards a deserted quarry which extends in the valley to the right. The landscape scene is coloured in a rose hue, perhaps anticipating fine weather to come. Impressionist influences are strongly felt in this scene; the paint is handled formally as textured layers are accumulated to represent flowers and vegetation across the landscape. Daubts of vibrant paint are used in rich red and orange colours. The sky extends dramatically above in a light rose pink colour.
