Summary

View of the medieval stone buildings that make up Chetham's College Manchester: according to the inscription on the mount, the year is 1790. We are looking down onto an open courtyard, Pupils of the school, wearing long gowns, are queuing across the yard to enter into a doorway on the left. Other figures are standing in groups, conversing. Two very tiny people pull a heavy roller across the ground, and three others are lifting a ladder to undertake some construction work to the right of the scene. The painting has a naive charm to it, but its condition is so poor as to make it hard to discern details: even the sky is brown.
