Summary

A last view of the Jolly Carters Ale House, on Gravel Lane, Salford, before its demolition to make way for the London & North-Western Railway. There are no people in the scene: as the note at the bottom right of the image records, this drawing was made as an architectural record, shortly before demolition. The artist has used a limited palette of black, brown and terractotta, with a blue-grey for sky and window panes. He has lightly indicated the larger factory buildings in the background, which dwarf the old inn. Already it is surrounded by a new fence of wooden palings which marks it off for destruction,
