North West View of Chetham's College from the banks of the River Irk

Charles Pye 1777 - 1864

Summary

A view looking up at a large stone building flanked by high stone walls. This is Chetham's College, Manchester, seen from the river Irk. The stonework of this imposing edifice is in good repair. The stone-mullioned windows are regular and evenly spaced. The craggy banks of the Irk loom in the foreground. Altogether the impression is given of worth and permanency. A sentimental touch can be seen to the right, where a standing College boy can be seen offering his hoop toy to a Grammar School boy (they can be differentiated by their different uniforms).
