The full title of this book is: 'A Memoir of the Late John Clowes, A.M., Rector of St. John’s Church, Manchester, and Formerly Fellow of Trinity College, Cambridge, Written by himself; Together with a History of the Commencement in Great Britain of The New Church, called The New Jerusalem, which was foretold by the Lord, In Daniel, Chap VII, 13, 14 and in the Revelation, XXI, 1, 2, The Doctrines of Which Church are delivered in the theological writings of Emanuel Swedenborg. To which is added, A Selection of Letters, on various subjects of Christian life and doctrine, addressed by the venerable author of the above memoir to several pious and intelligent friends.' This is the second edition (London: JS Hodson and W Newbury, Manchester: L Kenworthy, 1849). It contains the illustration by Charles Pye after John Flaxman (1755-1826) of the 'Wall Monument to the Rev. John Clowes (1743-1831)'. Clowes was rector of St John’s Church, Manchester, now demolished. Flaxman’s monument dates from 1818, the fiftieth year of Clowes’ ministry. The monument is lost, but the Gallery possesses a drawing for the head of Clowes. Clowes was a follower of Emanuel Swedenborg, and in 1792 founded the New Jerusalem Church in St Peter’s Street.
