Raphael (after) 1483 - 6 Apr 1520

Summary

A reproduction produced by the Vasari Society of a drawing by Raphael. In the centre is a full-length study of a bearded man. He is looking towards the right, open-mouthed and with one hand raised as though in astonishment. The drawing is loose, and clothes have been sketched in over the man's bare legs. Behind him are two more figures facing one another. We can only see the head of the man on the right, as his body is obscured by the aforementioned bearded man. The other figure is wearing a long, hooded robe. To the right of the sheet is a very rough outline that appears to indicate a head and shoulders. Text from the accompanying booklet produced by the Vasari Society: "6. RAPHAEL (b. 1483; d. 1520) SHEET OF STUDIES Collection of T. Loyd, Esq., Lockinge, Berks. From the Richardson Junior, and Reynolds Collections. Pen and bistre. Watermark: a crescent within a circle (near Briquet 5214). 31.1 x 21 cm. (12 1/4 x 8 1/4 in.). Obverse. A man making a gesture of astonishment, and other figures. Reverse. Three slighter studies of the same man and another of a man turning round and looking over the right shoulder. A hitherto unpublished sheet, found by the present writer in a volume of Old Master drawings at Lockinge House. The sketches, which are in the manner of the master's early Roman period, c. 1509/11, appear likely to be connected with the designs for the Stanze frescoes, although they were not actually made use of in any of the compositions. A. G. B. R. [Exhibited at the Burlington Fine Arts Club, Winter Exhibition, 1923-4.]"
