Study of two youths holding wands

Raphael (after) 1483 - 6 Apr 1520

Summary

A reproduction produced by the Vasari Society of a drawing by Raphael. The drawing shows two young men holding long sticks (that of the figure on the right is faded). The figure on the right is drawn larger than that on the left. Both figures are in similar poses, with one hand on hip and standing with one leg bent at the knee. Text from the accompanying booklet produced by the Vasari Society: "3. RAPHAEL (b. 1483; d. 1520) STUDY OF TWO YOUTHS HOLDING WANDS Collection of Henry Oppenheimer, Esq. Silver point on tinted paper. 21.5 x 17.5 cm. (8 7/16 x 6 7/8 in.). This sketch illustrates Raphael's manner between the years 1502-4 and resembles the studies made in prepatation for 'The Coronation of the Virgin'. It shows that gradual loosening of his workmanship in a period in which his invention is still dominated by Perugino. The handling has become more open than in earlier drawings and the direction of the shading less 'crosshatched' and more horizontal. As with most of Raphael's early drawings the influence of Perugino is less marked than in the paintings with which they are contemporary. Possibly this study may have been made in preparation for the 'Spozalizio' but not used. C. R. [Attrubtued to Perugino by Dr. Fischel, as a study for the young king on the left in the Adoration of the Kings at Città della Pieve (see Oskar Fischel, Die Zeichnungen der Umbrer, Berlin, 1917; No. 90, and plates 155 and 156).]"
