Life drawing of a bearded man

Adolphe Valette 1876 - 1942

Summary

A study of a nude male standing in profile to the left, his hands clasped behind him, with studies of hands on both sides, and one small study of a figure on the left. Chalk with white heightening. When appointed Art Master at the Manchester School of Art in 1906, Valette insisted that he teach by example and not by the standard methods of lecturing and lengthy criticism. He would correct an inaccurate drawing by making a quick sketch to illustrate his point. This life drawing, with the addition of many such sketches, illuminates Valette's teaching method. It is also distinguished by a richer mix of media than Valette usually employed for such drawings.
