A Riverside Inn

Thomas Rowlandson 1756 - 1827

Summary

A freely drawn village scene, in which a large crowd of people have gathered outside an inn to enjoy live entertainment and participate in games. The inn stands to the left of the composition with a flagpole and tall signpost erected outside it; to the right of the inn is a cluster of trees surrounding a house; in the right foreground is the shore of the river where a figure-laden boat comes ashore, and where a number of other boats have already been brought on to land, with some upturned and used as benches. The scene, in pen and ink and grey wash, has a drawn frame or border.
