Sketch on York Race Ground

Thomas Rowlandson 1756 - 1827

Summary

A gambling scene with three caricatured figures. There are two men to the left with a small dog to the left of them, of these two the man to the far left seems to be reaching into his pocket. The man stood facing them to the right holds a long staff in his right hand and a bunch of sticks under his left arm. He is using the staff to point at the pocket of the man to the far left. In front of him on the ground are four objects on top of conical supports. Crowds of people can be seen in the background, along with a cart with horses. The faint outline of a church is visible in the far background.
